Pulling back the financial curtain on one of Dell Technologies' key subsidiaries, the leader of Dell-owned Alienware said Thursday that Alienware's gaming business is worth $3 billion.

Frank Azor, a Dell vice president and general manager of Alienware, made the revelation to a group of media and analysts in Round Rock on Thursday. He said the amount is three times the size of Alienware's next closest competitor that has publicly released data.

"Our gaming business is a $3 billion business unit for Dell," said Azor, who co-founded Alienware in 1996. "This is information that we have never shared before... after today, it will become a larger part of our messaging publicly."

Miami-based Alienware makes high-performance PCs that cater to to video game enthusiasts. The company was acquired by Round Rock-based Dell in 2006.

Since being acquired by Dell, Alienware has "not compromised performance," Azor said.

"The gaming space is getting a little bit saturated. And folks oftentimes ask us, what are you doing to stay on top? Not that they are questioning that we are on top, but how do you stay on top? What are you doing to stay on top? What's the secret sauce? What's the magic," Azor said during a session with reporters and analysts. "I'll give you the answer: The answer is the  (Alienware staff) sitting in this room... I do think we have the best team in the world and that's why the results we have as a business are the best in the world."

Dell Technologies, the largest private employer in Central Texas, experienced its 10th consecutive quarter of PC shipment growth in the third quarter, according to tech industry research firm Gartner Inc.

Dell experienced worldwide shipment growth of 5.3 percent in the quarter, according to Gartner. In the U.S. PC market, the company had a .8 percent decline in shipments.

Dell remained No. 2 in the U.S. with 25.9 percent of the market share behind HP’s 30.7 percent of the market share. And Dell held the third place position in worldwide PC shipments, controlling 16 percent of the market share, according to Gartner data. The company trailed HP Inc. (14.6 million PC shipments) and Lenovo (15.9 million shipments).
